Prinoth Is Part Of Groundbreaking Project For World's First Fossil-Free Ski Area With SkiStar
SkiStar is conducting a unique pilot project to operate a ski resort completely free of fossil fuels.
SkiStar, a leader in mountain tourism in Scandinavia, has launched an initiative to make its Stockholm ski resort Hammarbybacken completely fossil-free. In this project, Prinoth plays a crucial role by providing the only electric snow groomer available worldwide, the Husky E-Motion. SkiStar owns and operates six ski resorts, and this pilot project not only contributes to their 2030 sustainability goal, but also serves as a pioneering example for future ski resorts.
Fanny Sjödin, Head of Sustainability at SkiStar, emphasizes the company's commitment to driving climate change in mountain tourism. "By undertaking this test, we show that it is possible to convert a ski area to fossil-free and at the same time we are humble and open to all the insights that the pilot project will provide us."
The aim is to demonstrate the feasibility of operating a fossil-free ski area. This requires a conversion of the entire vehicle fleet, with snow groomers usually being the final piece of the puzzle.
“With this pilot project, we are challenging ourselves to think in new ways and we hope that it will help us transition to more sustainable mountain experiences,” says Fanny Sjödin. Hammarbybacken is a pioneer in innovation and serves as an ideal place for this initiative to identify challenges, make decisions and serve as a guide for the future.
The project, praised by the city of Stockholm, is in line with the city's goal to be a global leader in reducing emissions and improving the climate by 2030. Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm, welcomes the use of Hammarbybacken as a test area for climate-friendly solutions.
The pilot project, which started on January 30, 2024, uses a purely electric fleet, which, among other electric vehicles, also includes the Husky E-Motion from Prinoth. Charging is facilitated by a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a new electricity contract ensures 100% renewable electricity and water. As a key participant in the press conference on February 13th, Prinoth, together with SkiStar and other partners, will provide insights into the first two weeks of the pilot project. The success of the project will not only represent an important moment for SkiStar, but also promises to be a catalyst for other ski resorts looking to reduce their carbon emissions.
Prinoth's participation in this initiative underlines the company's commitment to offering innovative and sustainable solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future in the world of winter sports and mountain tourism. The Husky E-Motion is not just a groomer, but a symbol of progress, helping to pave the way for reducing emissions in ski resorts and winter sports around the world.
