Ochsenkopf Cable Car South: Lots Of Confidence Before Demolition Work Begins

It's entering the second half: After the successful renovation of the Ochsenkopf cable car north, demolition work on the south side will begin on February 26th. District Administrator Florian Wiedemann invited representatives from politics, business and the press to take the old two-seater chairlift towards the summit from the valley station in Fleckl for the last time.

“The new railway also means more comfort, more efficiency and, above all, more accessibility on the south side,” said District Administrator Wiedemann in his speech. Those responsible will initially hang a total of 21 ten-person gondola lifts on the south side. A cable car like this takes a little more than five minutes on the south side to get from the valley station to the summit. “Unlike on the northern slope, there is no middle station on the south side. Overall, the work should be a little less complex,” said Wiedemann, who exuded a lot of confidence after the successful work on the north side.

Costs and funding

The costs for the Ochsenkopf cable car south are a total of 17.2 million euros, with the Bayreuth district having secured funding of around 4.7 million euros from the Free State of Bavaria.

District Administrator Wiedemann thanked everyone involved at the south valley station and encouraged them to continue to pull together in an exemplary manner: “We have already successfully completed the first half on the north side. Let's all take this momentum with us and complete the second half of this lighthouse project with such motivation and determination." The schedule calls for the construction work on the south side of Ochsenkopf to be completed this year and the new ten-person gondola lifts to be inaugurated in December.

Summary of the most recent winter season

The district administrator took the opportunity in Fleckl to look at the current winter season: In this winter season - skiing was previously possible from January 13th to February 3rd - 17,729 guests used the cable cars, 15,566 of them the new north gondola lift, 2,163 the Südbahn and 896 guests the Alpine Coaster. Expressed in terms of journeys, this means a total of 69,898 journeys, including 63,830 journeys on the Northern Railway, 3,766 on the Southern Railway and 2,300 journeys on the Alpine Coaster. According to the district administrator, the income during this period amounted to a total of 358,631 euros.

Finally, Florian Wiedemann once again pointed out the importance of the cable car project: “Our cable car project on the Ochsenkopf is crucial for tourism, for an entire professional sector in our region. Hoteliers, restaurateurs, their many employees, but also vacationers and excursion guests have great hopes for this project.” The aim is to provide impetus for year-round tourism that appeals to all generations.
