Austria - Over 50 Million Overnight Stays In The 2023/24 Winter Season
According to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, 50.55 million overnight stays were registered in Austrian accommodation establishments in the 2023/24 tourist winter season from November 2023 to February 2024, 2.37 million more than in the same period last year.
“For the first time since the start of the corona pandemic, over 50 million overnight stays have been registered in the first four months of the current winter season. The semester holidays in Austria, which were staggered over three dates, and the winter holidays in neighboring countries increased the number of overnight stays in hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments to 18.5 million in February 2024. With a share of more than a quarter of all overnight stays in winter, February is traditionally the most important month of the winter tourist season,” says Statistics Austria General Director Tobias Thomas.
Winter season to date exceeds 50 million overnight stays
At 50.55 million, the number of overnight stays in the 2023/24 winter tourism season so far (period November 2023 to February 2024) was 4.9% above the comparable period of the previous year. A total of 13.78 million arrivals were registered (+6.9%). Overnight stays exceeded the 50 million mark for the second time since the 2019/20 season, when 53.24 million overnight stays were achieved in the first four months of the winter season.
February 2024: +5.7% in overnight stays
In February 2024, 18.45 million overnight stays were booked, which corresponds to an increase of 5.7% compared to February of the previous year. Foreign guests recorded 14.92 million overnight stays in February 2024; That is 6.5% more than in February 2023. German guests accounted for 6.37 million overnight stays and Dutch guests accounted for 3.02 million overnight stays. The number of domestic guest overnight stays rose by 2.3% to 3.54 million.
