Authors Teaming Up For Ski Rossendale 50th Anniversary Celebrations

Two ski book authors from the North-West will be signing books at the celebration of 50 years of Ski Rossendale at The Hill on Saturday 10th June. 

Kimberley Kay author and illustrator of Ski A to Z - An Illustrated Introduction To Skiing from Bacup, Lancashire, and Caroline Elliott author of Fjord’s Mountain Mission resident of the Lake District, will be joining in the 50th Anniversary celebrations. 

Kimberley will have Ski A to Z books, art prints and greeting cards. Caroline and her beautiful dog Källa will be along to meet everyone and sign Fjord’s Mountain Mission books. 

Since starting skiing aged five spent much of her childhood and teenage years skiing and working at Ski Rossendale, which is now part of the The Hill outdoor entertainment venue. After an acute knee injury Kim shifted focus from travel PR to visual arts. When lockdown hit, unable to ski, Kim put her passion for the sport into writing a guide to sport, intended to demystify skiing, and make it easier for people to try the sport. Kimberley from Bacup in the Rossendale Valley in Lancashire , said,”I’m excited to celebrate this landmark anniversary of Ski Rossendale, I pretty much grew up on the slope, skiing from age 5, learning, racing, and later working in the ski hire teaching youngsters to ski. Skiing is wonderful sport so I’m glad that my book can help people have the confidence to give the sport a try. I made lifelong friends at Ski Rossendale, so I’m hoping to see many familiar faces at the event on Saturday.”

Caroline, who been based in the Lakes the past few years, is a snow safety educator, SAR avalanche dog handler and inspirational speaker. Fjord’s Mountain Mission is a 135 page illustrated snow safety book for children (5-10 year olds). Based on the real-life adventures of Fjord the avalanche dog, Fjord guides the reader through a typical day on the winter slopes with ski patrol. 

Caroline said, “Education is essential to keep snowsports enthusiasts safe on the slopes.”

The book helps youngsters learn essential knowledge so that they can become safer on the slopes. Endorsed by the FIS (The International Ski Federation) in Switzerland the book is available in English, French, German and Swedish and will be released next winter season in Spanish, Norwegian, Dutch and Japanese.

When it opened in 1973 Ski Rossendale was the longest artificial ski slope in the UK. 50 years on and venue is celebrating the anniversary with discounted taster sessions of skiing, snowboarding and tubing, and experienced skiers and snowboarders can use the main slope for free.
