2023 Edition Of World Indoor Snow Centres Guide Published…Now Nearly 100,000 Words, 250 Images, 500 pages…

The first full upgrade of the World Indoor Snow Centre Guide in three-years has been published.

The latest edition adds around 60 pages and 15,000 more words to the guide, taking it past 400 pages and 90,000 words for the first time.

The Guide now lists over 160 indoor snow centres built in the past 35 years in more than 35 countries on six continents. The first full update since spring 2020 includes more than 20 new centres and updates the Guide’s many charts of the biggest, longest and highest centres.

The new edition of the World Indoor Snow Centre Guide also details more than a dozen new buildings that are under construction and updates the current status of several dozen more that have been underway since before 2020. Half a dozen centres that have closed in the past few years are also updated.

“We are now in a world where climate change has severely curtailed the number of ski areas able to open outside the northern hemisphere’s main winter season, and the growth in the number of indoor snow centres worldwide continues to increase while the number of summer ski areas continues to decrease, so for almost half the year now the result is more indoor snow centres to ski in than conventional outdoor resorts,” said report editor Patrick Thorne.

The trend of indoor snow centres being built continues to favour Asia in the 21st century with China far and away the largest operator of indoor snow centres. The majority of new facilities opening for more than a decade now have all been in Asia and the accelerated construction rates suggest the 2020s will be the decades that sees the most new centres yet, just as the 2010s overtook the 2000s.

At our last major update in 2020 the number of operational indoor snow centres passed the 100 mark for the first time, reaching 113. Although a number of older centres have closed in the past few years and the only centre in Russia is to be demolished, the overall total currently open continues to grow and has now passed the 120 mark.

Apart from hundreds of individual updates and additions, new sections to the 2023 Guide look at the efforts of centres to switch to green energy and how those that have are in a better position for facing the increased costs of the energy crisis.
