Schladming Night Races Generate Sales In The Millions
In the coming week, the Schladminger Planai will be the scene of the legendary "Nightrace" for the 26th time. On the day after the slalom, there is an extra bonus for all ski fans this year with the giant slalom that has been relocated from Garmisch as an alternative. For the entire Schladming-Dachstein region, the legendary event has long since developed into a mega-success, not only in terms of sport but also from a tourist point of view. The spectacular floodlit races and an attractive supporting program with numerous parties and events attract guests from near and far to the Styrian Ennstal. The worldwide advertising effects are enormous, the slalom alone has brought more than 20 million euros in sales to the region in recent years. This year around 50,000 visitors are expected for both days of racing.
"The value of the Nightrace is really extraordinarily high for our region," says Mathias Schattleitner, Managing Director of the Schladming-Dachstein Tourist Association. “In addition to the sales directly related to the race, such as overnight stays and tickets, there is also a very high level of indirect profitability. In addition to tourism, many other sectors also benefit, after all, every Nightrace guest spends an average of more than 250 euros during their stay as part of the race. And this year these effects will have an even greater impact due to the additional race on Wednesday.”
140 media representatives from all over the world accredited
In addition to the added value on site, there is also a gigantic advertising effect that the Schladming-Dachstein region receives through the pictures that go around the world. The night spectacle in the Ski World Cup circus is a real media magnet. Almost two million viewers regularly follow the races in the main evening program on ORF alone. In addition, more than ten TV stations, including those from the USA, Japan and China, will be broadcasting live reports from the races. Altogether more than 140 media representatives are accredited for the night slalom on Tuesday and for the premiere of the night giant slalom on the Planai on Wednesday.
Lots of local volunteers
Hansjörg Stocker, President of the Schladming winter sports club, which is responsible for organizing the night race, emphasizes the tireless commitment of the OC team and the numerous helpers from the entire region: "A big thank you goes to all the partners and organizations involved and especially to the many volunteers who contribute a large part to the success of these races in their free time with a lot of passion and enthusiasm. Without this perfect interaction, the organization of such major events would not be possible. Thanks also to the people of the region for their great understanding during the hustle and bustle around the days of the event.”
There are still tickets for both races
On the nearby Reiteralm, the World Cup stars will find perfect training conditions in the days before the race. The Finale Grande piste is specially groomed as an entry piste for the athletes. Important for spectators: Around Schladming and in the region there are still overnight capacities on the race days. Specially organized shuttle buses to the Planai finish stadium guarantee guests in the region a smooth journey from the hotel to the race. Tickets for both World Cup races on the Planai are available in advance via the booking oeticket.at and thenightrace.at .
