Fire Destroys Calabogie Peaks Pump House

A fire has destroyed the pumphouse which houses snowmaking equipment of Calabogie Peaks Resort. The resort located about 105 km from Ottawa is one of Ontario’s most popular ski resorts. Calabogie Peaks resort closed its operations for the day butreopened Wednesday

Calabogie Peaks president Paul Murphy had said staff who arrived early to start the chairlifts and groom the ski trail noticed a fire in one corner of the pump house at about 6:45 a.m. and called 911.

“The recent fire to our pump house did not affect our lifts of our ski operations,” said Calabogie Peaks on Twitter. “We hope to reopen tomorrow. Please continue to monitor our social media and website for updates.”

"We hope mother nature helps us out in the short term while our pump house is rebuilt. We fully intend to have snow making back up and running within the next few weeks and are thrilled that we’ll be able to build another warming/sitting area even sooner.

"Our lifts, carpet, lodge, and all other operations were not impacted. Our hardworking staff rallied together as they always do to get us back up and running. All of our programs and lessons are still on!"

Greater Madawaska Mayor Rob Weir thanked first responders in a statement Tuesday. "Calabogie Peaks suffered a significant loss this morning and hopefully they will be operational in the near future," he said. "I would like to extend my gratitude to the McNab/Braeside Fire Department, OPP, Renfrew County Paramedics and our Public Works Department for aiding with this large fire incident. I would also like to commend the professionalism of all who assisted. I would like to extend a special thanks to Charbonneau's for their support of food and beverages. Finally, I would like to extend my appreciation to the fire department for its quick response to contain the fire."
