Dutch Skier Dies In 'Tux Fall, Friend Seriously Injured, Busy Day For Austrian Police

January 1st was a bad day on the Hintertux glacier and beyond.

On January 1, 2023, at around 10:15 a.m., two couples who were friends were skiing down the Hintertux Glacier along the red No. 1 Black Pan piste. The two women, a 28-year-old Dutch woman and a 27-year-old Dutch woman, then fell independently on the icy slope. The 28-year-old slipped about 100 meters down the slope, broke through a safety net and fell about 20 meters in free flight, unbraked, against a tree. The 28-year-old suffered fatal injuries. The 27-year-old fell almost at the same time, slipped unchecked over the edge of the slope and fell into a rocky hollow. The woman sustained serious injuries. She was flown to Kufstein Hospital in a rescue helicopter and transferred from there to the Innsbruck Clinic.

In another accident  at around 10:45 a.m., a 55-year-old German skier skied down the “Rote 1 – Schwarze Pfanne” slope on the Hintertux Glacier. On the steep slope of the "Black Pan", the woman fell on the hard, icy slope, slipped several meters unchecked, fell over the edge of the slope and then hit a slope about 10 meters lower in rocky, lightly wooded terrain. The woman sustained serious injuries. She was flown to the Innsbruck clinic in a rescue helicopter.

Finally at around 2:20 p.m., a 56-year-old German skier was skiing on the Hintertux Glacier on the red piste no. 5 Riepensattel, fell and crashed into a piste sign. The man sustained an eye injury. He was flown to the Innsbruck clinic with the emergency doctor helicopter.

 

On January 1, 2023, at around 10:20 a.m., a 40-year-old German skier was skiing in Oberndorf in the Oberndorf ski area on the black slope 7, fell without any third-party involvement and slipped on the approximately 46-degree slope over a length of around 300 m meters uncontrolled, or beyond the edge of the piste, before it came to a standstill. The man sustained serious injuries. He was flown to the accident hospital in Salzburg by rescue helicopter.

A boulder rolled down the black slope 14a in the Ischgl ski area and hit a 49-year-old German on the thigh. The man sustained a serious leg injury. He was flown to Zams Hospital in a rescue helicopter.
