LEGO snow art: 30 years of “Shapes in White”
When Ischgl calls for the 30th “Shapes in White” snow sculpture competition in January, artists’ heads all over the world will be smoking. This year the event has a broad “LEGO” motto. After viewing all the submitted designs, the Ischgl and LEGO jury selects the ten most beautiful and invites these international sculptor couples to sculpt their vision of the globally popular LEGO bricks and figures from Ischgl snow and to transform the ski area into a huge open-air gallery . The rules are simple: whether it's a LEGO castle, a ship or hero figures like Batman or Superman - whoever brings their idea to life in the most detailed way wins. The chosen ones will have time to build their up to seven meter high LEGO sculptures from January 8th to 13th, 2024. There will also be a predetermined LEGO-themed sculpture designed by last year's winning couple. If you want to look over the shoulders of the artists at work, you can visit the individual locations throughout the ski area during the construction phase. On January 13th, the Ischgl jury will choose the winning sculptures. A map with explanations and locations of the eleven “Shapes in White” is available free of charge on site. “Shapes in White”: How too much snow became an art project
What are we going to do with all this snow? Art – what else! With this idea, the snow sculpture project “Shapes in White” was launched 30 years ago. Since then, sculptors from all over the world have been sending their designs to the jury of the Ischgl Snow Sculpture Competition every year. This selects the most beautiful submissions and invites ten pairs of artists to perform them in the Silvretta Arena. The snow artists then have five days to create their up to seven meter high masterpieces out of snow in the 239 km ski area. The annual changing motto will be announced in advance. A wide variety of themes have already been imaginatively implemented with sculptures by the founders of Silvrettaseilbahn AG for the 50th anniversary (2014), sea creatures (1995) and dragons (2012). This winter, winter sports enthusiasts and snow art lovers can look forward to exciting interpretations of the “LEGO” theme at the 30th “Shapes in White” snow sculpture competition.
