St. Moritz Promises A Winter Of Classics And Highlights

With fresh ideas and inspiration, the new generation in St. Moritz is ensuring that the Alpine town is continuously developing further and expanding its offering. There will be plenty of Christmas spirit in the St. Moritz alleyways: festive decorations will adorn the pedestrian zone from 27 November 2022 until 8 January 2023. On 9 December 2022, the centre of St. Moritz will, for the first time, be transformed into a convivial Christmas market with regional products and specialities thanks to a collaboration between the Super Mountain Market and local shops.

WINTER KICK-OFF WEEKEND WITH NINETIES NOSTALGIA

Officially, the Winter Opening Weekend on 9 and 10 December 2022 heralds the beginning of the 2022/23 winter season: during the day on Friday, the FIS Para Ski World Cup will feature exciting races on the Corviglia. The Plazza dal Rosatsch will play host to the awards ceremony in the evening, followed by an open-air concert starring Italian pop rock icon Umberto Tozzi (“Gloria”). Nineties nostalgia will take centre stage in St. Moritz Bad on Saturday evening when Latin pop singer Lou Bega (“Mambo No. 5”) and Eurodance legend Haddaway (“What is Love“) will turn the Plazza dal Rosatsch into one big outdoor party. All the concerts and access to the Winter Opening site with DJs and street food are free of charge.

TWO SPORT ANNIVERSARIES AND THE RETURN OF AN ICON

After extensive renovation, the legendary Cinema Scala on the Via Maistra 29 will be opening its doors in the 2022/23 winter season and screen blockbusters, classics and arthouse works. The Saint Moritz Bobsleigh Club has a special place on the winter programme with its 125-year anniversary celebrations. From the beginning of December, the St. Moritz Design Gallery will have pictures from the club‘s history on display in the Parkhaus Serletta. On 5 January 2023, a Historic Race will be held with historical sleds and clothing from that time. 125 years ago is also when the first Jackson Cup was held in St. Moritz, which marks the first major curling tournament of the St. Moritz Curling Club founded in 1894 and is the oldest curling club in Europe. To celebrate, the anniversary tournament 125 Years Jackson Cup is on the programme from 13 to 15 January 2023.

THE REBIRTH OF LA MARGNA

With the Grace La Margna Hotel, another exclusive accommodation option joins the grand hotels in St. Moritz this winter. The opening marks the rebirth of La Margna, an art nouveau hotel from the early 20th century. The stylish lifestyle and boutique hotel on the Via Serlas 5 will be open 365 days a year – as the first 5-star hotel in the region. A new gastronomic experience will take place starting this winter season in the Corviglia ski area: a branch of the Italian premium seafood restaurant chain Langosteria is opening in the former CheCha mountain restaurant.

UNIQUE EVENTS IN A SPECIAL SETTING

The St. Moritz events calendar is, as usual, filled to the brim with events over the winter months. St. Moritz will become the focus of the sporting world with the FIS Para Ski World Cup (8 to 11 December 2022), the Women‘s Audi FIS Ski World Cup (16 to 18 December 2022) and the IBSF Bob, Skeleton & Para Sport World Championships (22 January to 5 February 2023). The nearby frozen lakes will come alive with activities, attractions and food stalls: the outdoor event series Ice Skating Lej da Staz on Lake Staz, which turns into a natural ice rink, can be seen from 12 December 2022 to 15 January 2023, whilst Amusements on the Lake returns to Lake St. Moritz from 16 January to 26 February 2023. The two prestigious mega events, the Snow Polo World Cup (27 to 29 January 2023) and the White Turf (5, 12 and 19 February 2023) present action-packed equestrian sport events in a unique setting on the frozen Lake St. Moritz. The Snow Golf Days (8 to 10 February 2023) also take place on the lake.

Traditional events such as the Gourmet Festival (20 to 28 January 2023), the only winter classic car show in the world The ICE St. Moritz – International Concours of Elegance (24 to 25 February 2023) and the Alpine travelling art fair NOMAD St. Moritz (23 to 26 February 2023) inspire connoisseurs, collectors and artists from all over the world to make the pilgrimage to St. Moritz every year. To close the winter season, two parties are on the programme: after a successful premier in 2022, the SunIce Festival (30 March to 2 April 2023) with world-famous DJs from the techno and EDM scene will return, whilst the cult Surfover event will take place at the Alpina Hütte, 2,550 m above sea level, on 8 April 2023 and showcase surfing skills, creativity and sounds from the 1990s.
