Bonn Cable Car: Administration Submits The Next Planning Steps To The Council

For the Federal City of Bonn, the planned cable car is an important building block in mobility transition. The administration now wants to make the plan more concrete.

For this purpose, the first reports on climate, nature conservation and other issues are to be commissioned. The citizen participation process is also to be continued. In a draft resolution, the administration proposes further planning steps to the city council for its meeting on June 9, 2022.

Before that, the Committee for Mobility and Transport (May 25) and the district councils of Beuel (June 1) and Bonn (June 7) will discuss the corresponding proposal. More concrete plans and first reports In one of the next steps, the longitudinal section of the cable car from 2019 is to be revised based on the current findings from other cable car projects and the current state of the art. At the same time, the first preliminary agreements with authorities and so-called public bodies are to begin. These include, for example, the NRW Ministry of Transport, the Cologne district government responsible for planning approval, municipal specialist departments, the responsible monument authorities and the copyright holder of the Rheinaue.

In order for ropeway manufacturers to be able to submit meaningful offers as part of the functional tender, the necessary expert opinions should be prepared in advance. Once a ropeway manufacturer has been found, these reports must be updated on the basis of its implementation planning so that the plan approval procedure can be initiated. The Bonn City Council should make a corresponding decision in due course. If the plan approval procedure has been successfully completed, there is building permission for the cable car. communication concept

The two-day information event at the beginning of April 2022 on Münsterplatz showed that a large majority of Bonn's urban society is positive about the project. It is also planned to intensively accompany and communicate the further steps towards the construction of the cable car in the context of the traffic turnaround. The existing communication concept is to be further developed together with the commissioned agency ifok and coordinated with the next planning steps.

To the background After a feasibility study (2016/2017), which determined that the cable car is technically possible, the standardized assessment in autumn 2021 provisionally showed that the cable car makes sense from an overall economic point of view. On this basis, the city council decided in December to register the cable car for the state's public transport needs plan. The regional council later agreed to this. In March 2022, the transport committee of the state parliament included the cable car in the requirements plan and the public transport infrastructure financing plan based on it.

The cable car is to lead from the Beuel district on the right bank of the Rhine across the Rhine up to the Venusberg. It is almost 4.3 kilometers long, includes 34 supports according to the current planning status and will have five stations: Schiessbergweg in Beuel-Ramersdorf, Post Tower, UN Campus, Loki-Schmidt-Platz and Bonn University Hospital. The cable car is to be integrated into local public transport. This would make Bonn the first city in Germany to have a cable car as part of local transport. That means: It could be used with the regular tickets and tickets for buses and trains.
