St. Moritz Says “Welcome To The 10th Tavolata Festival”

After a two-year break, the town, locals and visitors are once again looking forward to what is surely the finest festive spread in the Alps. “La Tavolata” is an Italian word used to describe gatherings of friends and family who meet to cook, eat and have a fun time together. Since the first such event was held in 2010, St. Moritz has chosen to celebrate its very own Tavolata in the picturesque heart of the village. Every summer the organizers transform the narrow lanes into an outdoor culinary paradise, the air full of aromas from the region and around the world. The crowning glory of the three-day festival is the Tavolata on Sunday.

Hoteliers, award-winning chefs, butchers and pastry chefs from the area will present guests with a feast of gastronomic delights. After an interval of two years, they will be providing regional and international specialities, offering sweet treats and specially selected wines. The action takes place around artfully decorated, rustic tables – made from Swiss pine, needless to say – as well as at the many great places to eat in St. Moritz, including a wide choice of food stalls specially set up for the festival.

The idea for “La Tavolata” first came about during a meeting of village club regulars. Thomas Kriemler, who runs a textile company in St. Moritz, suggested reviving the tradition of enjoying good food and conversation as a community by setting up a long wooden table in the pedestrian precinct and serving wine. This grew into a popular series of events centred around the unique Alpine tables. The festival now attracts visitors from all over the world as well as local residents.

Things get under way on Friday with the Michelin-starred cuisine of chef Christian Kuchler from the Taverne zum Schäfli in Wigoltingen. On Saturday, Patrick Marxer and Roland Heuberger will give people a chance to experience the art of sausage-making and savour the results, and upcoming local producers and restaurant owners will be presenting their specialities at food stalls for the delectation of the public. The grand finale is on Sunday, when the hoteliers and restaurateurs of St. Moritz round off the festival with a banquet of culinary highlights.

A first Michelin star followed in 2012 (Gasthof Hirschen in Eglisau) and in 2014 he was named “Rising Star of the Year in German-speaking Switzerland” and awarded 17 points. He has been the proprietor and head chef of the Taverne zum Schäfli in Wigoltingen (Canton of Thurgau), since 2015. He runs the restaurant with his partner Ramona Gubler. Since October 2017, the Taverne zum Schäfli has held two Michelin stars and 18 GaultMillau points.
