It's a Draw - Brignone & Huetter Share Garmisch Super G WIn
It has not happened since 2008 that there have been two winners in a World Cup Super-G. At the time it was Andrea Fischbacher and Fabienne Suter and today it is Federica Brignone and Cornelia Huetter.
Federica Brignone (ITA) rejoices for the nineteenth time in her career (the seventh in Super-G) and does so ex aequo with Cornelia Huetter (AUT). The Austrian, after her return to the podium yesterday in the downhill, managed to do even better and win for the third time in the World Cup (over four years since the last time in the downhill at Lake Louise) on the "Kandahar 1" which was the final chapter before the Games.
Federica Brignone honors in the best way the last World Cup race before the Olympic break voluntarily deserted by many protagonists of the circuit including Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova, winning with the same time as Cornelia Huetter . A fantastic performance for the Aosta Valley native, who in recent days had not been at the best of her condition due to illness,
In this way Brignone demonstrates that she deserves the bib as leader of the discipline with 477 points, the result of the other two seasonal successes obtained in St. Moritz and Zauchensee, in a ranking that seems to be an Italian affair, so much so that Elena Curtoni (on this occasion tenth) chases her in second position with 374 points, while the absent Sofia Goggia remains in third place with 332 points, when there are two races to go until the end of the calendar. T
The numbers show that Italy is already certain to have the first specialty cup of the season in the cabinet. Third place went to Tamara Tippler, with the Austrian team also putting Mirjam Puchner in fourth and Nadine Fest in fifth.
The general classification sees Shiffrin in command with 1026 points ahead of Vlhova with 1009, Brignone climbs to third place with 772 points, just 3 points ahead of Goggia with 769. Curtoni is ninth with 499. The World Cup is now taking a break until the weekend of February 26-27, when there will be two races.
For Brignone, this is a significant success because, in addition to representing her third victory of the year in her discipline, it means an increasingly red bib and 3rd place in the overall standings, 254 points behind Mikaela Shiffrin (3 points ahead of Sofia Goggia).
She said " "I am really satisfied with this result . I tried to concentrate my energies which were not so many just for the race, it was windy and I knew I was only forced to run the ski, without looking at the best lines but thinking only of not causing friction. I really like this type of snow, I reached the finish line knowing I had done what I wanted. I was afraid when Huetter reached the finish line, it is a shared victory and we are happy in two. I've been going strong in supergiant for a while now, in my career I have always felt more supergiant than gigantist, then it is true that in the first phase of my career I collected more among the wide doors. The supergiant is the race I have always preferred, where tactics prevail because we do not have the possibility to verify the track until the reconnaissance. I feel complete from the point of view of versatility, even if I miss slalom, I have shown that I have the qualities to take away as much satisfaction as I am doing. Now I will relax for a while now and then we will concentrate on the most important event of the season ”.
For Cornelia Huetter, this victory crowns the weekend but, above all, represents a new starting point after all the unfortunate vicissitudes of her career. Conny's day was rounded off because her friend and teammate Tamara Tippler was on the podium with her for the ninth Super-G podium.
