SIA Issues Media Dispatch - February '22 Edition

You know what time it is - welcome to the third edition of the monthly Media Dispatch from SIA (Snowsports Industries America)! This month has been action-packed with new sustainability initiatives, fascinating consumer insights and more. Looking a little forward, stay tuned for the new consumer report to debut in the coming weeks, followed by the NPD and COVID report in May, which will look a little closer at how the pandemic has impacted the industry

ClimateUnited Lab

The ClimateUnited Lab is officially LIVE and available for free to all SIA members. The ClimateUnited Lab offers a tangible, easily accessible and incredibly valuable platform that enables winter outdoor industry members to collaborate and learn from each other when it comes to combating climate change.

For additional story ideas, five key points worth noting about the ClimateUnited Lab are:

  1. It makes climate action accessible to every winter outdoor business, regardless of size

  2. It brings a broader approach - things like measuring emissions are included, but not limited to that, and offers a larger toolbox of systemic solutions to choose from

  3. It fosters industry-wide collaboration

  4. It unites the industry: 56 winter outdoor businesses have already joined the ClimateUnited Pact, aligning the winter outdoor industry on a set of achievable principles, aiming for progress over perfection

  5. It gives businesses the playbook, tools, and resources needed

    1. ClimateUnited Academy - think masterclass meets climate action expertise

    2. The 1.5C Business Playbook - helps members design an action plan to meet them directly where they’re at

    3. Tools & resources - workshops, readings, consultants, oh my!

    4. Advocacy Opportunities - sometimes the best change is made via policy

    5. A Platform for collaboration - collaboration with industry peers is the most powerful too we have to accelerate growth

Chris Steinkamp, Head of Advocacy for SIA, will also be hosting 30-minute introductory overviews of ClimateUnited Lab over the coming weeks. Days, times, and corresponding links to register for free are below, and they hope you’re able to check out this exciting new tool!

Share Winter kicks off its 2022 season!

SIA’s partnership with Share Winter renewed this winter when SIA pledged to make a $12.5K donation and challenged its members by matching donations up to another $12.5K. It’s our pleasure to announce that this goal has been reached! With these types of donations, Share Winter is able to increase the number of grantees it funds from 26 to 49 this year.  Each Share Winter grantee provides youth, ages 5-18, with at least 4 on-snow experiences, in Nordic or alpine skiing and/or snowboarding. The grantees also create ongoing opportunities for skiing and riding for program graduates. The goal is to get 100,000 youth on snow each winter by 2028. Share Winter’s mission is one we should all get behind, and SIA encourages you to check out their website if you haven’t before They’re stoked to see the support that came through from SIA’s members and can’t wait to see what’s to come in the future.

Latest Consumer Insight - “Snowsports Retail Consumer Behavior”

The third report in SIA’s consumer insight series has arrived - and it’s all about how consumers are purchasing their gear. From inventory-issue-snafus to preferred methods of delivery, there’s a ton of factors that go into informing a purchase, especially when it comes to winter sports gear during a pandemic. Check out the below infographic that explains a good portion of the bigger purchasing picture, and let SIA know if you have any questions. If any of these stats spark your interest, they'd love to send more information your way!

Miss the NextGen Study?

  • SIA’s newest study offers a detailed look into snowsports participation with a unique and new approach — those surveyed were non-participants, rather than core winter enthusiasts. The news may have been lost in the shuffle of the holidays, so if you haven’t had the chance to take a look, we’d be delighted to send it along.

  • Key takeaway: The information collected offers an incredibly important look into why people may not be participating in snowsports, how the industry can work to remedy this, and grow participation amongst a younger and more diverse group of people.

Upcoming Monthly Inclusion Meetup - February 16, 2022 @ 1pm MT

In the next segment of SIA’s inclusion discussion meet-ups, it will be discussed in-depth the details of leveraging relationships to become more inclusive.

In the previous meet-ups, ‘why inclusion’, what inclusion entails, how to create inclusion, and even when to create inclusion were discussed. Now, SIA will address how to connect and develop relationships with people, communities, and partners that you haven’t had to in the past.

During this month’s meetup attendees will talk through one of the most profound books that transformed the career of Dr. Gerilyn Davis (Many Communicate, Few Connect – John Maxwell), showing how the book was the catalyst to connecting the dots within her inclusive journey.

Also, Dr. Davis will shed light on Black History Month and the true intention of the month based on its origin.
