Mannheim Cable Car Construction Approved

The planning approval decision for the construction and dismantling of the cable car system for the BUGA 23 was issued. The Regional Council of Karlsruhe, as the approval authority, sent the decision.

“With the planning approval decision, an important milestone was reached at the beginning of this year. Now the preparatory structural measures can start and we are staying on schedule,” said BUGA 23 Managing Director Michael Schnellbach.  
The cable car is intended to transport up to 2,800 people per hour and direction over a route approximately 2.1 kilometres long, with a travel time of around eight minutes. According to projections, this will require 45 to 50 gondolas for ten to twelve people, as newspaper “Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung” reports.
 
Project manager Nadine Haas from the ropeway provider Doppelmayr is also satisfied: "The planning approval decision marks the start of a carefully planned project. We are pleased that the implementation phase can now begin, so that we can complete the cable car and put it into operation by the opening of the Federal Horticultural Show. Our thanks go to the Bundesgartenschau gGmbH for the trust placed in the performance of Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH.”  
 
The cable car will connect the two exhibition grounds Luisenpark and Spinelli Park. "This short and direct connection is attractive and barrier-free and will absorb the volume of traffic during the Federal Horticultural Show in a very special way," said District President Sylvia M. Felder, convinced of the benefits of the system.    
In addition, the cable car will be built in an extremely sustainable manner, parts of which will come from the temporary cable car system in Almere, the Netherlands, where the international garden show "Floriade Expo 2022" will take place. The cable car will continue to be used after the garden show in Mannheim. The preparatory work for the cable car will begin in March, the ten supports will be set in the summer, and the stations will be installed and the steel cable pulled in in the autumn. The ride on the cable car, which is powered by green electricity, will take about seven minutes. Project manager Nadine Haas: "The cable car ride will definitely be a highlight and a very lasting experience for all guests of BUGA 23."  
 
Background information on the plan approval procedure for the cable car: 
The approval process was initiated by the Karlsruhe Regional Council in mid-April 2021. The Regional Council of Karlsruhe is the planning approval authority responsible under the State Cable Car Act. 75 representatives of public interests, associations and other bodies were heard in the process. These include the technical supervisory authority at the Freiburg regional council, the aviation authority at the Stuttgart regional council, the waterways and shipping administration, the nature conservation associations and the representatives of people with restricted mobility. The objections and statements raised in the proceedings were discussed orally in October 2021 in Mannheim. The planning approval decision contains a series of binding commitments by the cable car operator and extensive ancillary provisions from the planning approval authority, in particular with regard to immission, Nature and fire protection as well as traffic issues. The planning approval decision and the planning approval documents will be sent from 14.02. are available for inspection in the technical town hall of the city of Mannheim until February 28th, 2022 and made accessible on the website of the regional council of Karlsruhe rp-karlsruhe.de under "Current planning approval procedures".
