Ceremony For The New Construction Of The Zugerberg Bahn Takes Place

The board of directors, management and representatives of the construction companies celebrate the start of the work of the century together at the groundbreaking ceremony. From February 7, 2022, the Zugerberg Bahn will be idle for a good ten months.
The route has withstood the weather and the strain of the railway for 114 years. Now it is time for a renewal. Vroni Straub, President of the Board of Directors of the Zugerberg Bahn, opened the ground-breaking ceremony with the words: “After an intensive and detailed planning phase, we are finally getting started. I would like to thank all partners involved for their commitment to our Zugerberg Bahn.» In his remarks, Philipp Hofmann, Managing Director of Zugerberg Bahn and Head of Market at ZVB, emphasized the importance of this construction project for Zug and the surrounding area. With the new high route, stable access to the Zugerberg can be secured for the residents, the Institut Montana and those looking for relaxation for the next few decades.
Demanding construction work on the mountain
The work in the sometimes steep terrain is demanding. With the companies Landis Bau AG from Zug and Hodel AG from Baar, the construction work is being carried out by two local and extremely experienced specialists. The steel elements are manufactured by Garaventa in Goldau. The new elevated route will run in the same place as it does today. Appropriate passages are created for deer crossing. A clear focus is on nature-friendly construction. The project team is accompanied by a building biologist in order to take due account of the special landscape and the natural surroundings. For example, the material will be supplied via a material ropeway specially constructed for this purpose in order to keep the work as gentle as possible.
Access to the Zugerberg during the construction period
Construction work will start on February 7, 2022 and will be completed by the timetable change in December 2022. During the construction period, the access function for the residents of the Zugerberg and the Institut Montana as well as the transport of guests with replacement buses will be ensured. The capacities are limited, group registrations are only partially possible. The replacement train runs from the Schönegg valley station via the Geissbodenstrasse. With the exception of these replacement buses, there is a general driving ban on Geissbodenstrasse during the entire construction period due to construction site traffic.
The Zugerberg Bahn in brief
Since 1907, the Zugerberg Bahn has been taking people reliably to Zug's local mountain. The funicular climbs 365.9 meters over a track length of 1280 meters. A ride takes eight minutes and has space for 80 people. Around 300,000 people use the Zugerberg Bahn every year.
The Zugerberg Bahn is a stock corporation with the purpose of licensed railway operations (public transport). The operator is Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe AG (ZVB).
