Art and winter sports go hand in hand again on Ischgl's pistes. At the snow sculpture competition "Forms in White", which took place in Ischgl for the 28th time this year from January 10th to 14th, four international artist couples transformed Ischgl's pistes into an open-air gallery for winter sports visions in five days. There are four spectacular snow sculptures up to ten meters high to marvel at: "Speed", a rapid bobsleigh ride on the bobsleigh run, "Ice Skates" a pair of oversized ice skates, "Big Air" shows a snowboarder performing aerial acrobatics and the figure " Eddie the Eagle” portrays the English ski jumping idol on the hill. After careful consideration, the Ischgl jury chose the sculpture "Speed" by Ralf Rosa and Peter Fechtig from Germany as the winner. Guests can admire the icy winter sports landmarks from all sides on foot or on skis. A map with explanations and locations of the "shapes in white" is available free of charge on site.
Winter sports visions implemented ice-cold
Four spectacular snow sculptures, four artist teams from three countries and ultimately only one 1st place. For the Ischgl jury, the 28th snow sculpture competition "Forms in White" under the motto "Winter Sports" was spoiled for choice this year: "The artists impress us every year with their creative motto interpretations and masterful implementation . This year, the four artist couples made our choice particularly difficult,” says jury member Dietmar Walser, Managing Director of the Paznaun – Ischgl Tourism Association. The jury verdict: In 2022, Ralf Rosa and Peter Fechtig from Germany were able to win gold for their "Speed" bobsled run. Vladimiro Tessaro and Giovanni Fabiani came in secondfrom Italy with their "Ice Skates". Simon Rauter and Peter Waldboth from Italy secured bronze with their “Big Air” snowboarder. Fourth place went to the Englishmen Justin Scott and Martin Sharp with their interpretation of Eddie the Eagle.
"Forms in White" - the idea behind the art project
What are we going to do with all that snow? Art - what else! This is how the idea for the snow sculpture project "Forms in White" came about in Ischgl 29 years ago. Since then, sculptors from all over the world have sent their designs to the jury of the Ischgl snow sculpture competition every year, based on a previously announced, annually changing motto. This selects the best ideas and invites the artist couples to implement them in the Silvretta Arena. The snow artists then have five days to create their up to ten meter high masterpieces out of snow in the 239 km of slopes of the Silvretta Arena. Thanks to a location mostly at over 2,000 meters above sea level and locations directly on and on the slopes, the sculptures can be experienced by winter sports enthusiasts for a long time. The event will take place again in January next year.
