2022: A Decisive Year For Andorra’s Candidacy For The Organization Of The Alpine World Ski Championships In 2027

In May 2022, the Principality of Andorra can make history if it finally becomes the organizing venue for the alpine world ski championships in 2027.

A very ambitious project for this small state of just over 77,000 inhabitants and area of 468 km2 located in a strategic enclave between Spain and France in the Pyrenees mountain range. A territory that annually receives more than 8 million visitors, of which 2.5 million are skiers. More than 90% of Andorra is in a virgin state, while the territory is blessed with optimal conditions for practicing snow sports and sunny weather for more than 200 days a year.

The Grandvalira ski area, in the Top 13 of the world ranking of ski days, has 210 km of skiing and would have the epicentre of the alpine world ski championships on its legendary Avet (Soldeu) and Àliga (El Tarter) courses. A skiable area that in recent years has been among the highest quality destinations of international reference.

Grandvalira has also been successfully organizing several other alpine skiing competitions in recent years, including the Alpine Skiing World Cups in 2012 and 2016 and the World Cup Finals in 2019. This has allowed the Andorran resort to increase its reputation and prestige with athletes, the sports family, and FIS.

This candidacy for the world championships for the year 2027 comes after a short but very intense journey that began in 2008 and that has placed the Principality in the international spotlight as a quality snow tourism destination.

A country united by a common goal, the Alpine World Ski Championships.

A project that brings us together and fills us with enthusiasm, and which perfectly defines the motto of the Principality: "Virtus unita fortior" (united we are stronger).

AWSC27 ANDORRA CANDIDACY OBJECTIVES

ALL-INCLUSIVE CANDIDACY!

The goal is for everyone to feel involved. The organization is undertaking various actions to publicize the project and bring on board other sectors of the country beyond sports:

  • SPORT + WELLNESS. Caldea, the largest spa centre in southern Europe, pays tribute to the candidacy with a show called "Hydrox" where water, as a source of wealth for spas and ski resorts, is the central focus of its autumn-winter show 2021–2022.
  • SPORT + CULTURE. La successió del bosc is a work by the Andorran artist and architect Miquel Mercè, inspired by the values of sustainability and respect for the environment. Based on recycled materials, the project will be shown to the public with an exhibition travelling for five months throughout the Principality.
  • SPORT + KIDS. The children of Andorra are one of the pillars of the project. Through different actions linked to World Snow Day, they are bringing educational activities to classrooms in coordination with the Ministry of Education in order to transmit values and promote healthy lifestyles thanks to the practice of sport.
  • SPORT + INCLUSION. They wish to bring mountains closer to everyone, so the Andorra 2027 candidacy works hard to make skiing and sporting events accessible.
