Sun Peaks Snippets For December 2022
Opening Day: All Three Mountains and Expansive Terrain
The 2022-23 winter season at Sun Peaks launched on November 19th. Skiers and riders explored all three mountains and over 20 runs via eight chairlifts under sunny, clear skies. Both staff and guests came out to celebrate a successful opening day and enjoyed the expansive terrain open on the slopes. Winter conditions continue to improve in the alpine and Sun Peaks looks forward to another winter season focusing on exceptional service and facilitating memorable guest experiences.

7 Celebrations – Reconnecting in Sun Peaks
The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association is celebrating seven communities across the region this winter, including Sun Peaks. The Thompson Okanagan is composed of diverse communities, cultures, and vibrant hard-working people. As part of this event, Sun Peaks will celebrate its community of women in sports and feature local artisan markets and storytellers. The Secwépemc peoples have been venturing to Swelkwek’welt, known today as Sun Peaks, to hunt and gather, develop traditional medicines, and for spiritual training and ceremonies for over 8,000 years; this event will showcase the history of their culture.
Exclusive Lift Access, Three Course Fondue Meal, and Starlight Mountain Descent
The Alpine Fondue and Starlight Descent will return to the Sun Peaks’ winter activities line-up this year. This Sun Peaks signature event offers exclusive access to the Sunburst Express chairlift for a twilight ascent to the Sunburst Bar + Eatery (located mid-mountain) after the slopes have closed. Once at the restaurant, participants enjoy a three course, Swiss-style fondue meal followed by a moonlit descent down the freshly groomed 5-Mile run. Skiers and riders are given a headlamp to help guide the way as they cruise down Tod Mountain under a sea of stars.
A Sun Peaks Classic: The History Behind Famous Cinnamon Buns
Sun Peaks cinnamon buns have been a staple in the ski day for many years. The recipe was first introduced by Sandra Hudson, who joined the two-person bakery team at Tod Mountain’s Burfield Lodge in the late 1980’s. Over the years, new bakers have attempted to add their own special touch to the sticky bun recipe. With each attempt, there has been criticism from the masses, demanding the return of the original recipe.
Modest in her words, Hudson admits she kind of “winged it” in an effort to impress her mother-in-law, a baker and cinnamon bun aficionado. Now, over 30 years later, Hudson finds it hard to believe the recipe remains coveted in the kitchens of Sun Peaks’ slopeside food and beverage outlets for guests to enjoy through the winter season.
