Val Gardena, 3 April 2022: The 24th edition of the South Tyrol Gardenissima came to a successful end. 481 skiers from 11 countries competed on the Seceda’s long and demanding slope.
Due to heavy snowfall over the past few days, the race was postponed to Sunday 3 April 2022, when weather was expected to improve significantly. It was a challenge for race director Giovanni Kasslatter and his team to prepare the participants for the 6-kilometre course from the summit of the Seceda (2,518 m) to the finishing line at the Col Raiser (1,485 m).
The ski race started at 8.30 am against the backdrop of a wonderful winter landscape. Plenty of sunshine and low temperatures (-14°C) provided the perfect conditions for the race. However, due to the fresh snow, skiers were a little slower than in previous editions. The best skiers were about 30 seconds slower.
Christof Innerhofer won the men’s race with an overall best time of 4'07.14 just ahead of Otmar Striedinger (4'07.72) and Daniel Hemetsberger (4'08.83), both representing Austria.
In the women's category, Franziska Gritsch (Austria) won with an excellent 4'14.04, followed by Christina Ager (4'15.49) and local hero Nicol Delago (4'16.90).
In the Ski Legends category, Massimo Penasa took first place in the men's category, followed by Peter Runggaldier and Lukas Perathoner. Andrea Fischbacher won the women's category, with Verena Stuffer and Nina Himmi nipping at her heels.
The Südtirol Gardenissima Kids, the race for the ski champions of the future, took place in the afternoon. Ski clubs from eight countries brought their young athletes to Val Gardena to take part in the challenging giant slalom boasting 463 hm!
