Canton Makes Contribution For The New Cassons Bahn In Flims

The government is granting Cassons AG a cantonal contribution of around CHF 1.86 million for the "Construction of the Tectonic Arena Sardona, Flims" project as part of the new federal regional policy (NRP). The contribution is spoken in connection with an NRP loan of eight million Swiss francs.

The development of the UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona is to be realized through the construction of an autonomous ten-seater gondola lift, a so-called rope taxi, which is unique in the world. The construction of this ten-seater gondola lift with five sections will replace three existing lifts with an innovative mountain lift system, which will significantly improve the basic offer in the main ski area in Flims. The new cable car will also be geared towards summer guests – in particular to open up the UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona – making a significant contribution to creating competitive tourism offerings. The rope taxi principle, i.e. a ride on request and no transport of empty gondolas, can reduce both energy consumption and wear and tear on the parts.

The Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona in the north-eastern part of the country covers a mountainous area of 32,850 ha which features seven peaks that rise above 3,000 m. The area displays an exceptional example of mountain building through continental collision and features .excellent geological sections through tectonic thrust, i.e. the process whereby older, deeper rocks are carried onto younger, shallower rocks. The site is distinguished by the clear three-dimensional exposure of the structures and processes that characterize this phenomenon and has been a key site for the geological sciences since the 18th century. The Glarus Alps are glaciated mountains rising dramatically above narrow river valleys and are the site of the largest post-glacial landslide in the Central Alpine region.
