Zermatt Updates For Upcoming Winter
Zermatt is getting ready for the winter with a blitz of news.
The ski test on the Theodul glacier in Zermatt is among the most beautiful experiences in the high alpine region. In October 2021, the modern and spacious Matterhorn Testcenter will open its doors, offering guests the opportunity to test the latest ski models in a unique setting. In the new, state-of-the-art Matterhorn Testcenter on Trockener Steg, the latest ski models for the new season from a wide range of brands will be available for testing from October. The clock is ticking: it's just one year until the Matterhorn Glacier Ride ll goes into operation. The modern 3S cable car will connect the Klein Matterhorn mountain station at 3,883 metres above sea level with the Testa Grigia valley station in Italy, thus enabling one of the highest and most panoramic border crossings – the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing.

As the final piece of the puzzle, the "Matterhorn Glacier Ride ll" will enable day trippers to travel back and forth by cable car between Switzerland and Italy all year round, not only on skis and snowboards, but also with dry feet, starting from autumn 2022. Breathtaking views, a unique experience and the highest level of comfort await you on the hour-long ride through the high alpine mountain world on this spectacular journey.
Celebrating winter, celebrating Zermatt. A new series of events under the banner "Winter Celebrations Zermatt" is set to herald the winter season. Visitors and local residents can enjoy a wide-ranging programme at various locations in the four weeks from 17 December 2021 to 17 January 2022. Experience ice and light art in the village and get in the mood for winter.

Founders of the new programme Philippe Oswald and Giovanni Beretta want to welcome winter in Zermatt with their "Winter Celebrations" concept – a destination project involving a wide range of service partners. In the month from 17 December 2021 to 17 January 2022, they aim to present Zermatt in a perfect light. The project is based on three pillars:
The Odermatt brothers and ice artists will be in situ during the four week period to carve ice sculptures with diverse subjects, including Christmas, snow sports and Lucy Walker, the first woman to climb the Matterhorn.
The sculptures will be illuminated from 5 pm to 9 pm each day and supported with a diverse programme of events.
Acoustic music, culinary delights and exciting discoveries: April has it all! From 5 – 9 April 2022, the organisers of the Zermatt Unplugged Music Festival are planning to fill the unique mountain world of Zermatt with delightful musical moments after a two-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic.
After a two-year break: Zermatt Unplugged 2022
One thing is clear: Unplugged is part of Zermatt. Visitors, artists, the destination and the organisers had this confirmed with its first musical summer edition – and at all altitudes. The Zermatt Unplugged Summer Weekends took place over two weekends in July; despite a reduced programme, the concert series was packed with all the emotion and joy of live music.
The 13th edition of the Festival edition in April 2022 will be similar in content and concept to the April 2020 event that was cancelled at short notice due to the pandemic.
Zermatt Unplugged – where you switch off to recharge. Where the music plays – over 5 days, on 17 stages and at over 100 concerts, unamplified and real. Where it's rare for audience and artists to be this close – connected by the music and connected with nature. With concerts outside and a backdrop of breath-taking scenery – sometimes on top of the mountain, sometimes in the heart the village.
Good food is also part of the deal. Where local gastronomy meets warm hospitality, good taste is on the menu. Swiss tradition and international lifestyle are the perfect mix for Alpine enjoyment in and in front of this beautiful festival setting.
The festival programme will be announced in December. Information on the programme and ticket sales will be posted on the Zermatt Unplugged website in due course (https://zermatt-unplugged.ch/en).
The organisers are also in discussions with the federal government and canton officials and will provide information on the protection regulations that apply on its festival channels.
The Stafelalp mountain restaurant at the foot of the Matterhorn, 2,200 metres above sea level, has a new look after several years of reconstruction.
The Stafelalp was destroyed by fire in April 2018 and a temporary facility was opened that December. Three years on, the Stafelalp is now back in operation in its original location.
Guests can expect the old familiar, cosy ambience in the new Stafelalp, a beautiful terrace with a view of the north face of the Matterhorn and upmarket cuisine with a modern twist.
Stafelalp will welcome guests again as soon as Piste 52 from Schwarzsee is open – usually around mid-December.
