Sun Peaks - Tribute To 60th Anniversary Of Skiing On Tod Mountain
Opening Day is always special at Sun Peaks, but this year was even more special. Guests and locals alike boarded the Sunburst chairlift and glided through the crisp winter air up Mount Tod. They set their skis and boards on freshly groomed snow and celebrated 60 years of skiing on this mountain!
In 1959, five Kamloops skiers ascended Mount Tod reaching what is now the Top of the World. Their zest for skiing came alive that day as they stared in awe at the snow-covered Crystal Bowl. They transformed their dream of having a chairlift into a reality - giving birth to Tod Mountain Ski Resort. As years went on, a deep love for skiing (and later snowboarding) settled into the lives of Tod skiers/riders and a vibrant community spirit ignited. The name may have changed to Sun Peaks, but the legacy of Tod Mountain remains now and forever.
Dreams Aglow
Think of someone who truly captures the essence of your community and who comes to mind? Zuzy Rocka does for Sun Peaks. She’s a local artist and snowboard athlete and has called Sun Peaks home for six years. That’s why Sun Peaks Resort commissioned her to create an original artwork to commemorate this special season. Titled ‘Dreams Aglow,’ Zuzy’s painting illustrates her perspective of Tod, the Sun Peaks village, and the nature that surrounds it. The bright orange and deep blue hues that meet your gaze are inspired by the patches that were historically sported on Tod Mountain staff uniforms. The resort also partnered with local business, Alpine Images, to offer prints of ‘Dreams Aglow’ to those who wanted to take a piece of Zuzy’s sun-soaked Tod home with them. The 60 limited edition signed prints sold out in an hour!
Altitude Adjustment
What better way to celebrate this special season than ‘cheersing’ a limited edition 60th anniversary brew? Sun Peaks Resort teamed up with Kamloops brewery Red Collar Brewing Co. to create the Altitude Adjustment- a citrusy White IPA thats light, crisp taste will be an après go-to this winter. The can’s exterior features Zuzy’s artwork and the contents taste just as dreamy as Tod looks in her painting. It will be available at the Sundance Liquor store and on tap at restaurants throughout the village.
ArtZone 60 Years of Tod Exhibit
Passionate, talented, and inspiring: all words that we use to describe local athletes in Sun Peaks; but also words we use to describe local artists. This season, as you walk through the doors of the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel, Guest Services and local businesses, you’ll be greeted with streams of colour and arrays of textures and shapes as ArtZone Sun Peaks will be launching a 60th anniversary art exhibit! The exhibit is set to begin in January, and each piece being shown has been created by local Sun Peaks artists. Stay tuned for further updates and to meet the artists behind the beautiful pieces being displayed.
