Poor Conditions Cause World Pro Ski Tour To Postpone Races
World Pro Ski Tour races at Aspen have been rescheduled to January due to weather conditions. Unseasonably warm and dry weather across the state of Colorado has delivered less-than-optimal snowfall and has disrupted snowmaking operations. These issues directly affect safety and execution of a professional ski race.
“Sadly, this is the type of thing we’re seeing more and more these days with events early or late in the ski season,” said Jeff Hanle, Vice President, Communications at Aspen Skiing Company. “Climate change is happening, and it will cut into the industry’s ability to host these types of events unless we take drastic actions.”
“Our primary goals as a Tour are to deliver races that are safe for our athletes and exciting for our spectators,” said Jon Franklin, CEO of the World Pro Ski Tour. “Aspen is a great and historic race venue, and we are excited to race there no matter the date.”
Aspen is open for business with 16 of 87 trails open but available terrain is extremely limited. The races were to be held on the lower half of the mountain where trails are in far worse condition than on the upper slopes.
The new race dates in Aspen will be January 8-9, 2022, with a full schedule to follow. Races are still planned for Granby Ranch in December, and the Tour will continue in Steamboat, Colorado and Taos, New Mexico later in the 2022 season.
