Doris De Agostini - RIP

It is with great sadness that SIN learned of the passing of Doris De Agostini on Sunday, 22nd of November.

The world of Swiss sport is mourning the loss of one of its greatest athletes. Doris De Agostini died at the age of 62 years after a severe short illness. 

The downhill specialist from Airolo competed in the World Cup between 1976 and 1983 and won eight races; she had, in total, 19 World Cup podium. De Agostini entered into the Swiss skiing world at the age of 17 when she won her first World Cup in January 1976 in the downhill race in Bad Gastein. De Agostini took part in Olympic Games twice - in Innsbruck in 1976 and Lake Placid in 1980 - and in 1978 she won the bronze medal in the downhill at the World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

In 1983 Doris De Agostini retired at the peak of her career at the age of only 25 - as the title-winner of the downhill World Cup. That last season she won the downhill runs of Val d'Isère, Schruns and Les Diablerets. In 1983, the Ticino native was also voted Swiss Sportswoman of the Year.
