Bozen-Jenesien Cable Car Ceases Operations, Replacement Planned

The current cable car between Bolzano and Jenesien will stop operating on November 24th. 200,000 euros are available for planning the new cable car.
From November 24th, the current cable car between Bolzano and Jenesien will be stopped due to a lack of demand, which had recently declined further due to the epidemiological emergency. The regional mobility department recently informed the concessionaire and the municipalities of Jenesien and Bolzano about this. An alternative service is being worked on.
This represents the starting shot for detailed planning of a new cable car connection. The planning of the new cable car connection between Bolzano and Jenesien is progressing: A total of 200,000 euros are earmarked for planning in the supplement to the 2020 annual program of Südtiroler Transportstruktur AG (STA). The state government will deal with the approval of the additional funds at its meeting next Tuesday (November 10th). Mobility State Councilor Daniel Alfreider emphasizes the importance of a new cable car connection to Jenesien: "Since the current cable car no longer meets current standards, we have been working on a new cable car connection to Jenesien for several years. With the new funds we are now starting the detailed planning."
In order to be able to continue, extraordinary maintenance work of just under 100,000 euros would have been necessary for the cable car that went into operation in 1937. It is currently mostly used by tourists. Commuters and schoolchildren are increasingly using the bus connection from Bolzano to Jenesien. According to the mobility department, there are currently only 200 users per day on average. In return, there are almost 500,000 euros in operating costs per year.
