Oberstdorf 2021 Provides Spring Update

These days it might be hard to imagine, but the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2021 in Oberstdorf (GER) are a mere 10 months away and to continue preparations the Spring Coordination Group meeting was held via conference call last week.

The Oberstdorf 2021 Local Organisers hosted the three-hour status update, presenting 180 slides to members of the German Ski Association, including President Franz Steinle, members from FIS, led by FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis and representatives from Infront Sports, the media and marketing rights holder.

After this winter’s extensive test event programme, which included competitions for Cross Country, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined World Cup tours, the Organisers provided comprehensive feedback on the new facilities that were in place already this winter, especially for the newly-designed Cross Country finish area and courses.

Of particular importance is that the final completion of the infrastructure could be carried out on schedule in compliance with the regulations and restrictions imposed through the appointment of a local company.

Away from the sport themes, the Organisers reported on significant progress in working with the local authorities on transportation, traffic flow and securing the necessary accommodation for all stakeholders. Additionally, several logistic areas have started to take shape, including the accreditation system, medical plans and media facilities.

“The Coordination Group meeting was highly uplifting to see the tremendous progress in Oberstdorf. Due to the current global and local situation, there are undoubtedly challenges to keep everything running on course during this important lead-in period,” said FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis. “Thanks to their excellent preparation and organisation, the Oberstdorf 2021 team with strong support from the German Ski Association experts have not missed a beat during this difficult time and is completely on schedule to welcome the World for a memorable FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in the Allgäu region early next year.”
