Austrian Schorghofer Hangs Up His Skis
Salzburg's Philipp Schörghofer announced the end of his active ski career today as part of a press event in Obertauern. The 36-year-old can look back on a successful career and talks with Ski Austria about his retirement, about his greatest success and about his plans for the future.
Philipp Schörghofer (born 20 January 1983) is an Austrian World Cup alpine ski racer. He has represented Austria at two Winter Olympics and four World Championships.
Philipp Schörghofer talks about the reasons for his resignation: "My goal was to return to the World Cup after my knee injury (2017 crash in Kirchberg, cartilage damage in my right knee) and to ski quickly. Unfortunately, that did not work out. I could not really overcome myself, to risk everything. I had a lock in my head. The herniated disc was then, in the negative case, the icing on the cake. The diagnosis has pulled the ground from under my feet. That's when I decided that I would end my career. "
... about the highlights: "Luckily there have been some highlights. Of course it could have been more, but less. You have to be satisfied too. The victory in Hinterstoder was really cool. That was the best day in my career. "
... about his career: "I experienced everything. From serious injuries to big successes. I am proud and grateful that I have done all this and mastered it. "
Schörghofer won silver in 2011 with the team and bronze in the giant slalom.
... about his last turns: "As an athlete you are looking for a happy ending. For me that would have been if I had slipped at a World Cup race at the finish. Unfortunately, this is no longer possible. Today's turns have been good for me and for me it was the most authentic.
... about his future plans: "I will continue to work for my ski company as a testimonial. TV commentator or expert, I could well imagine. There are some areas that interest me very much. It is certain that I will stay in the sport of skiing. In whatever capacity.
The Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) thanks "Schörgi" for his great success and wishes the family father all the best for his future private and professional future!
