Sugarloaf Tops 200 Inches Of Snow This Season
In what has become one of the snowiest seasons in recent memory for Maine's ski areas, Sugarloaf surpassed 200 inches of snow for the season on Sunday, February 24.
Sunday's storm deposited 12 inches of new snow at Sugarloaf, pushing the resort's cumulative snowfall to 201 inches. Snow continued to fall on Monday, with additional accumulation expected throughout the day.
"It's been an incredible winter to be a skier or snowboarder in Maine," Sugarloaf's Director of Marketing Ethan Austin said. "March is historically one of our snowiest months, so to be at 200 inches already is pretty incredible for Sugarloaf."
Sugarloaf averages 189 inches of annual snowfall, which includes an average of 38 inches during the month of March. The last time the resort hit 200 inches of snowfall before March was the 1997-98 season, which finished with a total 265 inches.
This year's high totals began with 69 inches of snow in November - the snowiest November on record for Sugarloaf.
Sugarloaf currently has 152 open trails spanning 1171 acres, including Brackett Basin, Burnt Mountain, and the resort's iconic Front Face Snowfields - all of which rely entirely on natural snowfall.
The ample base depths on the trails bode well for excellent conditions throughout March and April. The resort has a full lineup of events scheduled for both months, including the U.S. Alpine Speed Championships, March 16-21.
Located in Carrabassett Valley, ME, Sugarloaf is largest ski area in the East, and is home to the only lift-serviced above treeline skiing and riding in the East, as well as the number one golf course in Maine, according to Golf Digest. Sugarloaf is a member of the Boyne Resorts family of resorts and attractions.
