Gore Mountain Nordic Center Receives FIS Certification

Gore Mountain has announced International Ski Federation (FIS) homologation certifications for four of its Nordic courses at the North Creek Ski Bowl. These certifications mean that the courses have been inspected and are found to be in compliance with standards required for elite Nordic races to be held. The logistics of the venue, width of the courses, and safety of the layout are all considered along with elevation changes, spectator access, and other components necessary to bring a level of professional consistency for athletes that are competing internationally. Gore Mountain is one of just 29 FIS venues in the United States, and one of two in New York State. The certifications are for the 2.5K Distance Course, the 3.3K Distance Course, the 1.2K Sprint Course, and the 1.6K Sprint Course.

"The standards for FIS courses have become widely accepted by racers, coaches, and organizers, and are seen as what is needed for the best racer development and for running large-scale races fluidly using modern race formats and techniques," said Gore Mountain Nordic Center Director Paul Allison. The certifications enable Gore to competitively pursue bids events such as New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) sanctioned races, Division 1 collegiate races, and even World Cup level races. "We are thrilled to have our Nordic race venue certified by the FIS. This certification not only recognizes the quality of our venue, but will also allow us to host upper level FIS events," commented Gore Mountain General Manager James Bayse.

Upcoming Nordic races include the Mid-Atlantic Junior National Qualifier/NYSSRA Race January 19-20, the Section 2 Championships February 13, the NYSPHSAA Nordic Championship February 25-26, and several training camps and invitational events. Public Nordic events include Learn to Cross-Country Ski Day December 8, Nordic Fest December 7-9, and the Tuesday Night Citizens Series Races January 22-February 19.

Gore Mountain recently increased its snowmaking capabilities at the Ski Bowl with the purchase of 20 HKD Phazer snow guns designed specifically for Nordic terrain. The high efficiency of these guns qualified for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) grant program for furthering energy-efficient snowmaking statewide.

The Gore Mountain Nordic Center is equipped with lights, snowmaking, and grooming, and welcomes recreational users and athletes daily. The amphitheater style of the landscape at the North Creek Ski Bowl provides an outstanding experience for spectators, and the facilities include a lodge with rentals, restrooms, and fireplace, a food truck, a yurt, a tuning pavilion, and bleachers.
