Seirus Innovation’s Mike Carey Included In NFL Films Documentary “The Helmet Catch”
Seirus Innovation Co-Founder and President Mike Carey is a man with many hats…and a zebra-striped uniform. For twenty-four years Carey maintained order and rule on the gridiron as an NFL referee, all while building Seirus’ cold weather accessories and technologies. In 2007, Carey was chosen as the head referee of Super Bowl XLII – the first African American to receive the assignment.
The game between the New York Giants and New England Patriots ultimately came down to one play, which is considered one of the greatest Super Bowl catches of all time. “The Helmet Catch” is recognized by football fans as one of those plays that’s equal parts athleticism, opportunity, and absurdity. What’s hidden in the highlight reel though is the expert officiating that allowed play to even occur in the first place.
During the play, Carey leaves his original position in the backfield and quickly covers the distance to get a better look at the action. He concluded that the multiple defenders draped over quarterback Eli Manning failed to achieve “grasp and control” of the passer. Carey’s no-call allowed for a game-changing play and signature moment in Super Bowl history.
In the lead up to the 2018 Super Bowl, NFL Films interviewed Carey for the documentary appropriately titled: “The Helmet Catch.” In the segment, Carey underscores how close the miracle catch was to never taking place: “Just before I’m ready to call it dead, he breaks loose.” Now retired, Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin echoed just how narrow the window of action was: “I see Mike Carey the referee. Mike Carey is so close to blowing this play dead it’s amazing.”
The documentary also features interviews with NFL stars Michael Strahan, David Tyree, and Teddy Bruschi.
“During my NFL run, I made great relationships and was able to be a part of so many big moments,” Carey said. “To be able to return to the football world for a bit, reconnect with old friends, and relive this moment ten years after the fact was pretty special.”
