Mikayla Martin Wins Gold In New Zealand
The 2018 FIS Junior Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Championships held at Cardrona Alpine Resort in New Zealand concluded with great pride for Canada where both Canadian ski cross athletes reached outstanding results.
Our female skier, member of the Next Gen ski cross team, 21 year-old Mikayla Martin, a BC Ski Team alumni, crossed the line in first place in the women’s final. She was also first in the qualification run the day before. “I’m very happy,” said Martin. I put a lot of pressure on myself in this race and I was able to execute under pressure so it feels good.”
For the men representative, Phillip Tremblay, 19 year-old, member of the Alberta Ski Cross team, finished 8th, another very good result for our team. He moved up two spots from his tenth position in the qualification run.
Victor Dockal, Canada Ski Cross Next Gen Head Coach was pleased with both performances. “Both athletes worked incredibly hard the past 2-weeks for their respective results”, he mentioned.
Junior World Champs has seen many Canadian athletes on its podium throughout the years. Marielle Thompson won gold in 2013, and so did India Sherret in 2015. In 2016, Kris Mahler won the bronze medal for Canada. And last year, there were Canadian athletes on the podium: Zach Belczyk earned himself a silver medal and Alexa Velcic brought home the bronze.
