Canada West Ski Areas Association’s Places & Faces Summer News
Over the past month, the ski industry has mourned the passing of former CWSAA President, Jimmie Spencer.
While Jimmie didn’t want a funeral, there will be a gathering around the 2nd week of March 2019 in the Vernon area.
Congratulations to Derek Look who has recently moved up into the position of General Manager at Rabbit Hill in Edmonton and Doug Pettigrew has been promoted to Assistant GM, and Jocelyn Wetterberg as Marketing Manager. Jim Sutherland will remain as President, but will be stepping back from daily operations. Derek has been very active with CWSAA over the past few years, co-chairing the Alberta Marketing Committee and participating in various industry working groups.
Panorama Mountain Resort has made a number of management changes recently. Ryan Stimming has been promoted to Mountain Operations Manager, and CJ Matthews Dickson as Risk & Safety Manager. New to the Panorama team are Guy Paulson in the position of Global Sales and Business Development Manager, Patrick Fournier as Director of Resort & Mountain Operations, and David Auer Director of Food & Beverage.
CWSAA wishes to congratulate Jennifer Goad on her formal appointment as Executive Director for the BC Mountain Resort Branch. Until now, Jennifer has been the Acting Executive Director since Norman Lee was seconded and subsequently retired from government. Over her short time in the role, she has quickly demonstrated leadership qualities, and an energy and responsiveness to resolve issues impacting ski areas. Matt Austin (right) was named ADM earlier this year. Matt and Jennifer are based in Victoria.

Big White Staff Accommodation – The first new accommodation building is nearing completion with furniture moving in, and it will be ready for staff to move in for the upcoming winter season. Groundwork has been completed on buildings two and three and crews have been working on pouring the footings for the next two buildings.
Colin Saravanamuttoo served his last day as President and CEO of Canadian Ski Patrol on August 3. The search for his replacement is well underway as Colin made his announcement earlier this year. CSP is an important partner with CWSAA. Our thanks to Colin for his enthusiasm, vision, and professionalism in advancing CSP and building closer alignment with ski industry needs.
Greg Reschki is part of the new Board of Directors at Misty Ridge ski area near Barrhead, Alberta. The ski area has a new Harusch lift this for its beginner area for this winter.
Whistler Olympic Park is preparing for another year of Callaghan Gold – a pre-season ski trail built using approximately 10,000 cubic meters of stored snow from the 2017-2018 season. This 1.5km trail is scheduled to be open from October 27 to November 21, 2018 for pre-season high performance team training.
