FIS World Cup Season Finals In Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined And Big Air

Ski Jumping

Triple Olympic Champion Kamil Stoch (POL) won the final two ski flying events of the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup presented by Viessmann in Planica (SLO), to add to his overall season title which he had already secured before the last weekend of Ski Jumping action.

Stoch beat Johann Andre Forfang (NOR) and Stefan Kraft (AUT) in the first competition, with Kraft and Daniel Andre Tande (NOR) completing the podium in the second competition.

The small crystal globe for the best ski flying performances was awarded to Andreas Stjernen (NOR), FIS Athletes’ Commission member, who secured his first globe with consistent performances, including two podiums, of which one was a victory.

Team Norway won the team competition in Planica ahead of Germany and Slovenia to underpin its top position in ski flying. It was the fifth World Cup win in a row for the flying Vikings.

On the ladies’ side, Sara Takanashi (JPN) won both competitions at the season finals in Oberstdorf (GER) to claim her 54th and 55th victories and become the most successful female athlete in Ski Jumping history.

Daniela Iraschko-Stolz (AUT) and Maren Lundby (NOR) rounded out the podium in second and third place on both competition days.

Lundby had already previously secured the overall crystal globe in ladies’ Ski Jumping. Katharina Althaus (GER) and Sara Takanashi came second and third in the overall FIS World Cup ranking.

Nordic Combined

At the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup season finals presented by Viessmann in Schonach (GER), Akito Watabe (JPN) ensured he finished a season to remember by securing victory in both competitions.

Jarl Riiber (NOR) finished second in both competitions with Bernhard Gruber (AUT) and Fabian Riessle (GER) completing the podium on day one and two respectively.

Watabe, the two-time Olympic silver medallist already secured the FIS World Cup title before the competitions in Schonach, while Riiber and Riessle ended second and third in the overall standings.

Freeski

The 2017/18 FIS Freestyle World Cup season ended with big air competitions in Quebec City (CAN).

The big crowd on hand was treated to victories by Dara Howell (CAN) and Christian Nummedal (NOR), as Silvia Bertagna (ITA) and Nummedal took the big air crystal globes in a thrilling down-to-the-wire battle.

Bertagna came into the competition in fifth place overall, needing a win or a second place result to become the first Italian lady to win a Freestyle globe in any event. In a thrilling final, she was second behind Howell, with Megan Cressey (CAN) in third place.

The race for the men's overall crown was a tight duel between Christian Nummedal and Elias Ambuehl (SUI), who both had 129 points going into the event.

With a strong performance, Nummedal claimed the win as Hugo Burvall (SWE) and Teal Harle (CAN) completed the podium. Ambuehl ended the competition in fourth place.

Snowboard

At the FIS Snowboard World Cup big air competitions in Quebec City, Olympic silver medallist Max Parrot (CAN) ended his season with a big victory ahead of Jonas Boesiger (SUI) and Antoine Truchon (CAN)

On the ladies’ side, Julia Marino (USA) comfortably beat Laurie Blouin (CAN) and Loranne Smans (BEL) in second and third

Olympic Champion Anna Gasser (AUT) claimed the big air crystal globe on the ladies’ side, while Chris Corning (USA) secured the globe on the men’s side. Both sat out the competitions in Quebec City.
