A Foot Of Fresh Snow And Ideal Snowmaking Temperatures, Steamboat Is Set To Open New Terrain Daily

With a nearly a foot of fresh snow and ideal snowmaking temperatures this week, Steamboat is set to open new terrain daily when four lifts, 16 trails and 64 acres of terrain will be open for skiing and riding.

This morning, all of Heavenly Daze is freshly groomed and open for carving. On Saturday, Bashor terrain opens with Bashor lift operating throughout the weekend. For beginners, the following green trails will open Saturday: Boulevard, You Hoo and Right-O-Way. Intermediate trail Eagles Nest also will open. On Sunday, Burgess Creek lift will start turning with access to Arc, Ego, Lightning, Rudi’s Run and Tower. Next up, Steamboat snowmakers will shift their focus to terrain off Storm Peak Express, Preview and Lil’ Rodeo terrain park.

“Steamboat’s snowmaking crews have been working extremely hard around the clock for the last four days, and our skiers and riders will soon be seeing the result of this hard work with additional terrain opening daily,” said Dave Hunter, vice president of mountain operations. “Steamboat’s snowmaking system and our crews have set new records with the amount of guns we have been able to run. And with more cold weather in the forecast, we can assure we will not let up our efforts to provide additional terrain as quickly as we can.”

After a storm rolled through Steamboat on Sunday night and brought fresh snow and low temperatures, snowmaking crews have worked nonstop, running 146 guns and setting a new snowmaking record. Snowmakers have made 126 acre feet of snow this week (enough to cover that acreage 1 foot deep). That accounts for 20 to 25 percent of the man-made snow Steamboat will produce in an average season.

“Wintry weather has arrived in Steamboat, and fresh snow and temperatures in the teens and single digits have helped us open additional terrain,” said Rob Perlman, president and COO of Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. “We’ll continue to open new lifts and terrain as often as possible through the holidays.”

While crews work to open additional terrain, uphill access users are strongly discouraged from recreating on closed trails as snowcats and snowmobiles will be on the mountain day and night.
